GSSI Library Research Day
John A. Logan College
Saturday, April 14, 2018
11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Have you heard the saying: “not all genealogy information is published on the internet?” There is nothing like picking up a library book and stumbling across a fact that is about one of your ancestors or about the area they were residing. And since we know that the internet is a fantastic tool, only a fraction of genealogical data has been digitized for computer research. That is why we still need to research other sources, especially at libraries.
Since the beginning of the Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois in 1973, books have been gathered from different sources; society members, purchased, and donated by family historians. One of these books might hold a fact to help you break through that “brick wall.”
The April Quarterly meeting will consist of opening the GSSI section of the JALC library for your research pleasure. We hope you have been able to utilize this great resource in the past, but if you have not, you will be for a good surprise.
The GSSI genealogy section contains books from most of the southern Illinois counties, several other states, and even books on the Mayflower passengers and their descendants. Possibly holding information, you might need! Board members will be there to assist with your search and try to answer your questions.
There is a no food or drink rule in the library. But there is a snack area just outside the library, with drink and snack machines.
We are excited about this event! Hope you will be able to attend. If you have any questions, contact us at email@example.com.
A descriptive inventory of the Genealogy Archives held by GSSI is now posted to the society website. The inventory, compiled by Archivist Edward O'Day, contains the surnames of over a hundred Southern Illinois families for whom there are substantial holdings in the archives. You may access it from the Menu bar on the Main Page or directly from the following link http://ilgssi.org/gssi-archives/ The Archives are open for research by appointment only.
Our sympathies to the family of Rosemary Mathis.
A long time GSSI Board Member, enthusiastic genealogist and great friend. Rosemary passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017, after a short illness. She will be greatly missed.
