The Lincoln-Douglas Debate in Jonesboro, Illinois
Written by Darrel Dexter
130 pages Indexed
Forward:
" Talented local historian Darrel Dexter takes a close look at the Jonesboro debate and it's witnesses. He illustrates Douglas' arrival in Cairo before the debate, and Lincoln's journey from Centralia to the home of David L. Phillips of Anna, the leading Republican of the district and doomed candidate for Congress. He makes clear that this was a Douglas-Lincoln debate, with the celebrated Douglas brought to the site in a carriage as Lincoln trudged to the fairgrounds barely noticed. He bid for local approval by remarking that he was raised 'a little east of here,' but Douglas rejoined that Lincoln meant Indiana, far to the east of Jonesboro. By reiterating his position, Lincoln demonstarted to party leaders and newspaper readers that he could face a hostile crowd unruffled. Later book publication of the text of the debates enhanced Lincoln's reputation and aided his election as president." - John Y. Simon June 2008
