Locust Grove and Black Settlements presenting Kimberly France (Family History Conference)

Kimberly France was born and raised in Carbondale. She began researching her family lineage in earnest in 2020 upon learning of a relative's terminal illness. After three years of research and revelation, she, she penned the book Black Settlements in Southern Illinois in an effort to document critical pieces of Illinois history that aren't well known. Ms. France is an alumnus of Howard University and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Pulling off The Sheets featuring Local Historian and Author Darrel Dexter (Family History Conference)

Local historian and author Darrel Dexter grew up in Ullin, Illinois, "with the silent ghosts of the Ku Klux Klan all around him". Noone talked about the Klan having once existed in this town, although the site of a cross burning and rally was less than a half mile from the house in which he grew up, the Klan came quickly and left just as fast. Darrel's book, examines what the Klan left behind. |

On August 20, 1619, 20 enslaved Afticans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia. The 400-year journey that followed would change a nation and the world. 1619: The Journey of a People is a dynamic theatrical and lecture experience featuring Playwrite, Professer and Performer Ted Williams III. |

The Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois willl be hosting The Daniel H. Brush chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution along with the Illinois Humanities Program. Storytelling for Civic Pride: There's More Here by Laura Sievert.
This presentation will center on storytelling through the lens of shared public spaces. It's no secret that our public art, museum, and history records are largely missing the stories of women, people of color, and marginalized communities. Laura explores the real logistics of how we change the way we tell our community stories. Participants will learn that changing our collective sotrytelling isn't just a moral imperative, but a sound investment in our Illinois economies. |
